Mash-ups

May 5, 2008 at 10:47 pm (Uncategorized)

Some of the mashups seemed completely useless, or at least for my lifestyle.

I did find one I found interesting http://lazylibrary.com/ — which lets you look for books that are 200 pages or less. This could be great in a Public Library – where you get asked all the time for school assignments for books that are 100+ pages, but not more then 200 pages.

I looked up the privacy stuff – and because I read Shifted Librarian, Krafty Librarian, AL and the others – I didn’t really find much new to me on the topic – but I can see how this might be useful if you are trying to brush up on a topic, or what to see what other Librarians are doing.

Stuck in Lodi…YouTube posting..

April 28, 2008 at 9:09 pm (Uncategorized) (, )

Well – couldn’t find a great “library” site I wanted to post about…so since I live in “Lodi” and many people think I am “stuck” here. Little do you know what a great place it is…thought I would leave you with this.

Pictures of Lucas

April 28, 2008 at 8:55 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

Well – I thought I would post some pictures of the other “child” in our home. Here is Lucas and Emily playing in the front yard. He is about 15 months, we “rescued” him on Emily’s 2nd birthday.

Picture sharing..

April 14, 2008 at 5:40 pm (Uncategorized)

I think the ability to share pictures is great. That way people can pick and choose what pictures they want and buy the sizes they like. I tend to use Kodak’s gallery – because I like the ability to send the prints to Target and pick them up there. I worry about privacy, but things seem to be fairly secure.

I am not sure how we might use this in our Library. Though it might be a great way to archive and share some of the things that are happening at our various locations.

Web Office Tools

April 10, 2008 at 4:54 pm (Uncategorized)

I was really impressed with the capabilities of Google Docs. I think it could be very useful when working with groups of people who are located in different offices, or even different companies. It would cut down on the email and the confusion.

I also looked at Zoho and was impressed with how many different applications they offer. You could run a small business with all of their applications.

I can see how some of the workteams I am on could really collaborate with googledocs. Polices, procedures, committee documents – all of this would be easier then emailing everything back and forth. It also stores them – which means you don’t have to worry about accidently deleting the email, or in our case archiving it within so many days -so it doesn’t get dumped.

Social Bookmarking

April 1, 2008 at 6:17 pm (social bookmarking) ()

I find social bookmarking very useful, it makes it much eaiser to find websites again. I don’t like having a laundry list of “favorites”, and I don’t like being tied to one computer.

I could see setting up multiple accounts. A personal account, and a Library account, or even account that is for a specific class that you might be teaching.

I like seeing what other people bookmark – and how many other people have bookmarked it. It let’s you know if the site is used frequently…it doesn’t really mean it is reliable, but it does show that it has a visible spot on the web.

Social Networking Sites

March 24, 2008 at 4:58 pm (facebook, linkedin, social networking) (, )

I think that these sites have the potential to connect people, and help you network, or keep up with old friends. I prefer Linkedin and Facebook, they seem to be more focused at networking, and less on being a teen :-)

I think you do have to be vary careful with privacy. We know that many kids have gotten in trouble with MySpace, and that their comments and pictures, which have followed them all the way to their college applications and job interviews.

I think that Social Networking can be useful for some aspects of a public library, I am not sure I see the use in a small special Library setting.

Blog vs. Wiki

March 17, 2008 at 5:55 pm (Blogs, wikis) (, )

I think that blogs and Wiki’s both have their place. I think Blogs are easier to use, and easier to read.

I think Wiki’s are great for group projects. In fact we are looking at putting together one commitee use, this way we can post items, keep track of requests, and archive our thought process.

I think Blogs are great for “instant” communication, notifying people of what is going on, what is new and exciting.

I found using wordpress was pretty easy, I tried making a wiki recently using mediawiki, and found it to complex for what I needed.
